the secret to a perfect Mother's Day gift + how to wear a trench coat for spring in Los Angeles - M Loves M @marmarCan you all believe that Mother’s Day is coming up?! Don’t forget ok? Mother’s Day is one of my favorite holidays to shop for. I love picking out sweet gifts for my mom and mother-in-law, and especially since I’m now a mom, I recognize how important this day is. I love Mother’s Day because it’s a day to truly honor the women in our lives who have helped shape us into who we are today. Whether it’s a mom, mother-in-law, grandmother, or aunt, I’m sure you all have an influential female in your life who has guided you over the years, served as your sounding board, your cheerleader, and your role model. Today I’m sharing the secret to a perfect Mother’s Day gift in case you’re looking for something special! I’m also sharing some of my favorite things about my mom, including the thing that impresses me so much about her! This is the one thing I think every parent wants to achieve but it’s not always possible.

If you want to know the secret to a perfect Mother’s Day gift, it’s monogrammed anything! It seriously goes so far! You can monogram your mother’s initials, or even give her ones with her kids’ initials. My monogrammed jewelry and accessories are the pieces that I always want to wear and bring with me because they feel so much more my own. I love wearing my pieces monogrammed with Augustine’s initials because they make me think of him throughout the day. It’s a small touch but it means more than you’d think. I know this is weird, and maybe a little crazy, but last week I had this random thought that maybe one day my Augustine’s monogrammed jewelry items will go to his girlfriend or wife. It’s kind of bittersweet to think about but it could make these pieces that much more special.

When I think of the best monogrammed items I always think of Mark & Graham. They have the most incredible collection, from personalized jewelry to bags, to travel items, to home items. I borrowed this navy leather bag with the bamboo handle and  I think this would make an incredible gift for a mom. You can choose the font, color, and style of the monogram to really make it her own. {Or your own, if you’re shopping for yourself!} This bag is so chic for the office, but it would also hold all the mom things because of its size. I’m also very into this backpack style bag which would be so cute and functional on the go. I love a hands-free option! On either, you could add a monogrammed tassel. There are many color options, but I always default to blush because I think of it as basically a neutral. I love that this tassel is an accessory that you could add to any bag, or even your keyring if you wanted!

I can’t wait to spend Mother’s Day treating my mom and doing something special with her! She’s one of my absolute favorite people because of how kind and loving she is. She set a great example for me in terms of balancing work with family and knowing which was the most important of the two. Even though she worked full-time, she would drop everything as soon as she got home to play with me and my brother. She’d also leave work early to get us to our soccer practices, and other extracurriculars, and she’d turn off on the weekends to be together. It was inspiring to have a mom following her career dreams because it gave me something to look up to, but I also respect how much she loved and valued our time together as a family. She’s taught me about faith, hope, love, honesty, hard work, goal setting, and baking too! My mom values hugs and words of affirmation and is always so sweet and supportive, no matter what. If I ever have a problem or need someone to talk to, she’s always there listening attentively, and offering ideas and suggestions when I need them. All of my friends love my mom so much and it doesn’t surprise me. She’s wonderful and in my humble opinion, the very best!

One thing I’m so impressed with my mom about is how she was able to balance being a strict rule-maker but also being a friend. My mom was not a pushover growing up. She had rules and meant business. I wasn’t scared of her, but I respected her. Like any mother and daughter, we’d butt heads about things {like my Abercrombie crop tops in high school}, but at the end of the day she was my best friend and she was always there for me. That balance must have been so tough for her to figure out, but she did and she did it well. More than anything, I hope to be the kind of mom she has been to me. I’m so lucky to have her to look up to, and I know Augustine will feel the same.

Have you started thinking about Mother’s Day gifts? Do you have any go-tos? And if you’re able to see your mom in person {I know some of you don’t live in the same city/state}, what are you going to do? I’m hoping to plan a little brunch at our house for my mom and Matthew’s mom. I think it would so nice to be all together!
