wedding wednesday: music songs

April 27, 2011

This week we have music on the brain- in a good way and a bad way. We had a little mix up with the DJ so we are now in search of someone amazing and obviously at the last minute. If any of you know of a really cool LA/Ventura based DJ let me know and I’ll be eternally grateful!
On a fun note, could you guys comment with your absolute favorite wedding songs? I haven’t been to a wedding since I was 12 so my knowledge is a little lacking. I’d love to hear your favorites, and even your least favorites! {Do you guys hate the Macarena as much as I do??}
  • My best friend specifically told her DJ, "DO NOT PLAY 'THE TRAIN.'" But enough people requested it that by the end of the evening, it made its way onto the speakers, and we had a full on conga line going around the reception hall. Totally priceless, in a totally ironic way.

Dan and I are trying to keep our music relatively non-traditional, so I may or may not be walking down the aisle to the Imperial Death March. We have yet to decide, but it's definitely an option 🙂

Good luck finding a new DJ! I can't imagine how much stress you must be under with just a week to go. I'll let you know if I can find anyone in your area, but most of the contacts I have are unfortunately NorCal based :

  • You haven't been to a wedding since you were 12? Whoa! That's amazing!

Well, let's see… some songs that get the crowd going seems to be 80's music. Like The Promise. Hope you get a good DJ soon!

  • I like "something" by The Beatles :)Hate the Cha cha slide. Ick.

  • I know it's played all the time but I love At Last by Etta James. I just love her 🙂

    Good luck finding a DJ!!

  • I love anything silly to dance to like a fool. I can just imagine jumping around to Stevie Wonder's uptight, everything's alright.

  • hmmm. anything fun and campy. not good for a drive to the mall, but great for a huge drunk crowd. think YMC, but slightly more original. but only slightly. lol. thanks for another inspired post. if you get a free second stop by and check out my latest fash recap and the must have bag designed by one of LA's hottest stylist. xoxo

Don't forget to follow on twitter for all the latest celeb fashion news.!/FashBoulevard

  • My fingers are crossed that you two find a DJ soon.
And I've been to weddings without music (yes, horrible), with traditional songs, and a mix between all kinds of contemporary stuff. I like Etta James' "At Last", or Michelle Featherstone's "we are man and wife" and even Ray LaMontagne's "let it be me".
Worst song? Haha, the Macarena is definitely on there. And there's the "Ketchup" song or something like that…just a totaly no go!

    Good luck girl.

  • Amy

Are we talking slow dancing songs or fast dancing songs? "The Luckiest" – Ben Folds Five; "Life in Slow Motion" and "This Year's Love" – David Gray. Those are really great slow ones. Journey is always a hit, so you guys could rock out to songs like "Don't Stop Believin'" and "Any Way You Want It", but they have some classic ballads too.

    amy day to day

  • M.

    hate the electric slide.

    love shout!

  • Eek… good luck with the DJ search! I wish I could send my DJ to you, he was absolutely awesome and kept everyone dancing all night!

  • I'm a wedding director, so I've heard 'em all!!! Least favorite: YMCA, Cupid Shuffle, Hamster Dance. Favorite of all time: Because You Love Me by Celine Dion – may seem old and cheesy to some, but still gives me goosebumps every time. Best processional ever? The Last of the Mohicians sound track. Talk about amazing!

  • ok. i am so going to be my own dj at my wedding! haha! i have had a mental list going for years now!
i would love an old school medley at some point with the twist and beatles and elvis and stuff. and then some 90's hip hop.
🙂 good luck finding someone mara!

  • Our "wedding song" was Inseparable by Natalie Cole 🙂

As for wedding songs that are fun, I don't know…depends on the crowd. I like some group dances, like the Cha Cha slide! That's a lot of fun!

  • Sir M and I danced to "When you say nothing at all" by Alison Kraus. But we had lots of fun music at our wedding. Our exit song was "I like big butts" by sir mix-a-lot, which was kind of a personal joke between me and my MOH. And I figured all of the older and easily offended people would have left early so I gave the DJ the go ahead to use that for the last song!

Good luck picking out your tunes!

  • you know you've got to play the cupid shuffle!

  • Gotta play "Shout" – I know it's cliche, but it's just so…wedding! I can't imagine a wedding reception without "getting a little bit softer now!"

  • what a darling record player! i love everything jazz. 🙂 but i am also a lover of country music. check out Brad Paisley — Then. 🙂

  • for a great slow dance, my husband and I had our first dance to "Tonight" by JJ Heller. Its a perfect wedding song!

  • I had a must NOT play:
    Chicken Dance
    Electric Slide

I was okay with SHOUT because it's a fun group dance.

The BEST thing we did at our wedding reception was called "The block of cheese"
    1. You get EVERYONE on the dance floor for a group photo (bonus you get the group photos) then the DJ tells everyone to stay standing because they are all now apart of the block of cheese (people are puzzled but curious). Then the dj has 30 seconds of random music in a row about 6 songs and people have to dance the way they believe that song should be danced too. For example we had : 50's swing song, Ballet Song, Shout, Walk like an egyptian and then Teen Spirit came on and everyone including grandparents were jamming out.

Sorry TMI? lol good luck I have a DJ in las Vegas who travels if you get desperate.

  • The songs that stand out from are wedding…

Tonight's Gonna be a Good Night by Black Eyed Peas (and pretty much everything black eyed peas)
    Low by Flo Rida
You Make Lovin' Fun by Fleetwood Mac (this was our last dance)
Make You Feel My Love – Adele
You Make My Dreams by Hall & Oates
You Are The Best Thing – Ray La Montagne
Only Girl in the World by Rihanna (I would also add Who's That Chick – David Guetta & Rihanna

Okay, I think that's my favorites list 🙂

Good luck with your DJ!!! Ours played the wrong processional song. Still haven't forgiven him!!!!

  • Aren't songs a fun part of the wedding planning! I still have a year before my wedding, but my wedding songs list is already put together by artist and song and all the key songs picked out for sure! My sister and her husband had their first dance to Ray LaMontagne's "You Are The Best Thing," which I just loved and her Father-Daughter dance was to Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water," another favorite of mine! Can't wait to hear about yours! All the best with the final planning stages of what I know will be your BEAUTIFUL wedding!!!

    Liesl 🙂

  • I didnt pick any music too!

  • gia

Al Green- i'm still in love with you.
Tina Turner- something happy and energizing.
Ray Charles- something happy and romantic.

  • oooh I am so glad I checked in today my best friend's son is an amazing d.j.

  • you might like this, this is a Tagalog/Filipino song entitled IKAW
    here is the youtube video.

here is the lyrics with English Translation

    Ikaw ang bigay ng Maykapal
    Tugon sa aking dasal
    Upang sa lahat ng panahon
    Bawat pagkakataon
    Ang ibigin ko'y ikaw

Ikaw ang tanglaw sa 'king mundo
    Kabiyak nitong puso ko
    Wala ni kahati mang saglit
    Na sa iyo'y may papalit
    Ngayo't kailanma'y ikaw

    Ang lahat ng aking galaw
    Ang sanhi ay ikaw
    Kung may bukas mang tinatanaw
    Dahil may isang ikaw
    Kulang ang magpakailan man
    Upang bawat sandali ay…
    Upang muli't muli ay…
    Ang mahalin ay ikaw

    You are given by God
    The answer to my prayers
    So that every day
    with every given chance
You will be the one that I'll love

You are the light in my world
The other half of my heart
No one else to share it with
No one else can replace you
Now and forever it will be you

    Everything I do
    You are the reason
If there's ever a tomorrow to look at
    its because there's you
    Forever is not enough
    for every moment
    for me to love you
    over and over again.

  • Darling I Do- Landon Pigg. simply beautiful

  • Our first dance was A Kiss to Build a Dream On by Louis Armstrong. My dad and I danced to Unforgettable by Nat King Cole & Natalie Cole for the Father/Daughter Dance. We had You Are So Beautiful by Joe Cocker for the Anniversary dance. When I'm Sixty-Four by The Beatles was the cake cutting song. I adore Ever Ever After by Carrie Underwood from the Enchanted Soundtrack, so we played it for the Bouquet Toss. We didn't have a Garter Toss but I thought about playing Diamonds are Girl's Best Friend by Marilyn Monroe.

  • Ivy

The best song I've ever heard for a wedding is "I'll Be" by Edwin McCain. It is so beautiful it make me cry every time I hear it.

  • What kind of vibe are you guys going for? I suspect it's soft and classic and romantic, so going on that here are my recommendations:

Stevie Wonder- For Once in My Life
    Michael Buble- Everything

I totally agree that the Macarena etc. are obnoxious. But I also agree that Shout is fun and not lame! Have fun!

  • omg i hate macarena! oy! hahaha
my fiance and i are playing fun songs that we love to dance too! and that hold a special place in our hearts. you cant go wrong if you love them!

  • Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Glenn Miller, Ray Charles, Dean Martin, Ella Fitzgerald… u'll always find a great song from them.
If u want something to cheer up the people, then pick Earth Wind & Fire!

    Good Luck finding the DJ!

  • Wow really I have been to more than 10 weddings, maybe 20 (yeah it's a lot).

"Real Love" by Mary J. Blife
"Sweet Caroline" by Mary J. Blige
"It's my life" by Bon Jovi
We had a few Sam Cooke songs and some remixed Lady Gaga songs (I think it was "pokerface" with a Kanye remix?)

If you'd like our playlist, let me know 🙂

    Chic 'n Cheap Living

  • Gosh, our wedding feels like so long ago now. We had quite a number of favorites but absolute favorite would have to be our first dance. It was "Book of Love" and we found a cover on iTunes by Awaken A Cappella which we fell in love with. We actually enjoyed coming up with the music for our wedding. Good luck and have fun!! 🙂

  • The songs are the best! It was our favorite and easiest part of planning! Here's my suggestion–get them dancing early. The ones that we really liked were the Beatles, Sam Cooke, Michael Jackson for the classics. We also like Lady Gaga (say what you will but that girl knows how to make a song that people will dance to), Usher, and CeeLo Green. The slow songs have to be interspersed in the dance so that people can take a break but there are so many good ones out there.

I would avoid the chicken dance and the ymca and the macerana. just pick songs you like and what you will dance to!

  • Ray Lamontagne: You Are The Best Thing is the PERFECT wedding song in my opinion. Also, Bright Eyes: The First Day of My Life.

  • Just went to a wedding last week where after the vows and all that the bride/groom walked down the aisle to the latest Edward Sharpe song, blanking on the name of it.. but it was awesome 🙂 also cant go wrong with the beatles and i have a soft spot for jason mraz..

  • You haven't been to a wedding since you were 12? Wow! I've been to three so far this year (one was my own!) and I have another one in May!

    Two song suggestions:
At Last – Eva Cassidy version
This Never Happened Before – Paul McCartney

    x Jasmine

  • Mara, my friend just moved to SoCal and he's a great dj! If you're having trouble finding one, let me know, he might be available. (and he's super affordable)

There's a song called "Next to Me" by Sleeping at Last – it's seriously the sweetest song in the world, and it makes me cry everytime!

Other songs that I love are:
    You & I – Ingrid Michaelson
Something in the Water – Brooke Fraser
Forget Me Not – The Civil Wars
    1234 – Feist
    Jungle Drum – Emiliana Torrini

    Good luck, lady! <3

  • We played 2 or 3 of Edwin McCain..LOVE him! I'll Be and I could not ask for more are two of my favorite wedding songs! Good luck!!

  • Anything by Harry Connick Jr! He is amazing and his music is always wedding appropriate!

  • In Belgium we always have some fun songs for later on the night, but they are in Dutch and you probably don't know them 🙂 And that's how far my wedding tracks knowledge goes as well, I've never attended a wedding before 🙂 I hope you find a new DJ on time! x

  • I'm meeting with our dj when I'm home i a few weeks so I've been working on songs we like. I've pretty much just gone to itunes and the billboards website and see what is hot right now. that is what everyone is listing to now.

other than that, I want to start out with more fun songs that are for all ages('we are family', 'fishin' in the dark' with some salsa mixed in) then move onto more 'club' type music towards the end of the night (lady gaga, beyonce, celo, etc.)

and you know… if all else ask a friend or family member who is good at music and ask them to download and create a playlist and just hook up the laptop or ipod to the speakers.

  • Every stupid song feels amazing in the right crowd, wich i'm sure you've chosen….

In my wedding, we played a little bit of everithung and even the Macarena was a hit….(no, I'm not crazy, in normal days, i hate it)…

  • we played "love will tear us apart" at our wedding. we're strange like that though. 🙂 there are lots of great wedding songs by the cure if you're going the more modern route. i also love that sweet song "anyone else but you" but the moldy peaches. also, you can't go wrong with classic jazz standards – ella, sinatra, etc.

  • I don't know much about wedding songs, but I have a wonderful playlist on my iTunes that I call "Eros". By far, one of my fave love songs is "Amazed" by Lonestar.

  • Shout! such a fun song to party to 🙂

PS- i posted pics of your shower on my bridesmaids blog today!!

  • i have been meaning to do this because we wore working on our list this past weekend. sorry to hear about the dj i am sure you will find someone. for the ceremony my fiance found this band called the Vitamin String Quartet and they do superb instrumentals of popular songs.

  • Wow Mara it's only week away…here are a few songs that I think are great options for a wedding

    The Cure-Pictures of You

    Henry Mancini-Moonriver

Frank Sinatra-The Way You Look Tonight

  • The thing about songs played at weddings is that the cliche ones end up being cliche for a reason because literally everyone will dance to 'Shout', from grandma to the flower girl. And then once everyone's on the dance floor you could literally be playing anything they'll all have a fantastic time. But definitely start off with stuff that appeals to all generations! =]

    Good luck with it!

    xx Melina

  • Just ran across your lovely blog. Super cute. I have to say anything is better than the electric slide! That song has run it's course!

  • I love wedding music! Hal and I danced to "You and I" by Micheal Buble. That's a good wedding song. Also Ingrid Michealson's "falling in love" and Adele's "To make you feel my love"

  • "You and I" is beautiful Wedding Song.
