A Quick and Easy Vegan Whipped Coffee Recipe

Vegan Whipped Coffee
Prep Time
5 mins

Course: Drink
Servings: 2
Ingredients
  • 2 tbsp instant coffee powder
  • 2 tbsp boiling water
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • pinch of cinnamon
  • almond or cashew milk to serve
  • ice to serve
Instructions
  1. Add the instant coffee powder, hot water, and sugar to a bowl.

  2. Use a hand whisk or an electric mixer to whip the mixture until it's light and fluffy. It should take about 1-2 minutes. You'll notice the color will change from a dark brown to a caramel brown.

  3. The cream will be strong when it's whipped but remember you'll be mixing it with milk. To serve, spoon about half the mixutre over a cup of almond/cashew milk with ice in it and stir. This is better enjoyed right after mixing.

  4. You can add additional sugar or cinnamon at this stage, too, if you like!

Recipe Notes

I split the cream up between two short glasses, but if you want one extra tall glass you could consider this one serving.

Whipped coffee, also called dalgona coffee, gained popularity recently during social distancing and has since been dubbed the “quarantine coffee” or the “quarantine drink”. The trend started in South Korea, dalgona being a Korean sweet that is a honeycomb toffee candy {even though the drink rarely actually contains dalgona!}. During quarantine, this delicious frothy drink became a huuuge trend – not only is making the coffee aesthetically pleasing but with peoples’ favorite coffee shops closed, a new at-home coffee recipe was super exciting! People began posting DIY videos to participate in the #dalgonacoffeechallenge, and it’s been trending ever since!

Being a trendy new coffee drink that social media is obsessed with, I kind of expected it to be a fancier drink, but it’s actually SO easy to make! The first step is to whisk together equal parts of instant coffee powder, hot water, and sugar into an airy foam. You can use your standard kitchen whisk, or you can also use a machine mixer. I prefer the machine mixer because it’s a lot faster, and more enjoyable! Then you just pour it over a glass of milk – so simple! I know what we’re all thinking, how can these kitchen staples and a simple process produce such a creamy and fluffy drink?? I was definitely a little bit skeptical, but looking at all the posts about people trying it, it actually works! The taste is really rich and strong but balanced perfectly with the sugar. What I love about this recipe is you can still cater the ingredients to your preferences by using your favorite milk, using healthier sugar alternatives like coconut sugar, and you can make it hot or iced!! Oh, and one tip I read on the internet to really get the best whipped coffee is to make sure you use hot enough water so the ingredients combine well. I made sure that mine was just boiling. To make this a vegan whipped coffee, I used my favorite almond milk. We always have a jug of this in our fridge, but you can always buy it too!
