camel coat with pink lace dress M Loves M

This year I’m trying to stay calm and avoid the holiday stresses and, instead, focus on how grateful and lucky I am. The one thing I am the happiest about in my life is Matthew. I don’t know how I got so blessed with this one, but I feel eternally grateful. Matthew is my match in so many ways, and while he’s my true love, he’s also my best friend. We are so silly together and talk about everything. He’s the Marshmallow to my Lilypad, the Ross to my Rachel, just without all the drama!

I’m a huge romantic and when I was little I had all sorts of thoughts about who my husband would be. I felt like I molded this fantasy in my mind- someone who could dance and sing like Gene Kelly, captivate me like Rhett Butler, and be my best friend like Mr. Knightley. I prayed every night for my future husband, which might sound a little silly but it’s true. I remember driving to my Grandma’s house, looking at the stars and wondering where he was at that moment. Little did I know he was just a few hours south of me in sunny San Diego!

The process of falling in love is so fun and exciting and even now I wish I could go back and do it all over again with Matthew. While falling in love is a dream, continuing to love each other is a reality. There’s no question that marriage is a ton of work and compromise. It isn’t easy and it is a process. Regardless of how two people come together, though, it’s the combination of friendship and love that keeps them together. I feel like that has been the success of my relationship with Matthew. And the fact that he can sing and dance doesn’t hurt either!

I was so thrilled when Ever Us allowed me to borrow one of their gorgeous rings for the holiday season! It’s a beautiful keepsake that features two diamonds, equal size, side-by-side and touching. The ring symbolizes one diamond for your best friend, and the other for your true love. I love that it highlights these two sides that I find incredibly important in a marriage. You need both the friend and the soul mate. Those are the two most important qualities in a marriage, in my opinion. Someone who will love you, be there for you, listen to you, talk with you, cry with you and laugh with you. This ring would be a timeless gift that you can wear daily to remember just how special your love is.

  • Well, this is just the most romantic thing ever! And the photos of the two of you are just perfect!!!
I met my husband at college, our Junior year. We just got married this year! You’re so right – we’re best friends and so much in love. That ring is perfect!

aww thanks is so sweet!! Congrats on your recent marriage! Matthew and I met in college too (my Junior year also!) xox

  • That ring is so beautiful and so is your love story. My hubby and I met through a mutual hobby and talent – dancing, and we decided to get talking. We talked for a long time before we dated and that’s what enabled us to become best friends first. It made the dating process easier.
In 3 days We will have been married for a year and 2 months, and he still is my bestie and my soul mate. X

      thanks so much Katie!!

  • Love this post! I’m engaged to best man I know and I’m lucky to call him my best friend, Michael! We actually met at the gym which may seem like a surface level attraction but it was our personalities that really attracted one to the other. He’s the kind of man who rather spend time or money making someone else happy because that brings him the most joy! He reminds me a lot of my dad in little silly ways (and since my dad passed away in 2013 from cancer) I appreciate those alignments in personality traits. He makes me feel loved and appreciated and I hope I do the same for him! Im a wedding planner and officially launched my own business this year! I would knot have been able to pursue my dreams if it weren’t for him and how quickly said “go for it!” Insisting that he would take care of financials if it didn’t take off right away. Luckily I’ve been able to launch without a hitch!
We got engaged on we met in February of 2014, we were officially an item in March of that year and on 12/30/14 he proposed to me in the happiest place on earth (Disneyland)! On May 13th, 2016 were tying the knot in Sonoma county!
So in love with our love story (and that’s the way it should be!)!

    • Mara

aw Elise!! I love your story soooo much!! On so many levels! I think it’s great you met how you did. It’s harder to meet people after college so I always think it’s great when you can connect with a similar interest. And I think it’s so sweet that he reminds you of your Dad! I’m sure your Dad would love him too!! Congrats on your upcoming wedding, the love you two share, and your wonderful new business. You’re an inspiration! Hopefully you can go to Disneyland again at the end of this year to celebrate 🙂 2016 is going to be wonderful!!! So excited for you! <3

  • That ring is seriously so pretty! I love it!

    • Mara

      Thanks Paige!!

  • this is so sweet! I think you and Matthew are such an inspiration! I’ve been with my boyfriend for 4 years now, and I can totally relate with what you said: friendship + love + compromise + hard work keeps a relationship strong! Being best friends is so important, and builds the foundation for a successful relationship.

    That ring is so beautiful.

    • Mara

yes totally!! It’s so important to find someone that can be a friend as well! Congrats to you and your boyfriend on 4 years!!

  • Awww! This warms my heart so much, Mara! What a wonderful story! I’m still single and holding out for the one so I’m focusing on me right now and becoming the best version of myself everyday. 🙂

    • Mara

That’s a great idea!! And you’ll definitely find your special someone 🙂

  • natalie

you and matthew are such a beautiful couple and it looks like he simply adores you! 🙂 i completely agree with you about being best friends with your partner. it helps so much when the relationship experiences some really low lows – when the romance/love is struggling, you can at least count on that person to be by your side no matter what. i’ve known my boyfriend for a very long time. our mothers worked together when i was in grade school and they’ve been best friends since. him and i never really hung out or spent too much time with each other, but we kept in touch over the years. we met up after i broke up with my ex and we’ve been going strong for almost 8 years. we’ve been talking about marriage recently and the ring you have on is simply gorgeous…i might have to show it to him! 🙂

    • Mara

aw Natalie that’s so sweet! I’m so happy for you! It’s so important to find someone that you can connect with you and that will be there to help you through the ups and downs. The fact that you’ve known each other for so long will help so much in a marriage too!!

  • Rachel

My partner, Kraig, and I have been together for almost 10 years. We started dating the summer after we graduated from high school and we’ve been going strong ever since. Love is a wonderful thing!

    • Mara

aw that is so wonderful!! Happy 10 years!! So special 🙂
