Wellness Challenge No. 9

Happy Sunday everyone! And happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there! I have a new wellness challenge for you all that’s diet related. This is one that I know will help me feel better, but it involves a habit that’s hard for me to break! Read on for the Wellness Challenge No. 9!

I’ve been trying to focus on only eating 5, somewhat smaller, meals a day: a breakfast, mid-morning snack, lunch, mid-afternoon snack, and dinner. For this next week, I’m going to try not to eat outside of these meals. Aka no snacking! Anyone else a big snacker? It’s something that can become such a habit and there are days where I feel like I’m putting food down my mouth nonstop.

My snacks of choice include popcorn, cheese and crackers, peanut butter on toast, and let’s be real, chocolate and candy, too! I have a major sweet tooth if you don’t already know!

The problem is that when it comes time for my bigger meals, I’m not as hungry but I feel bad that I haven’t put substantial nutrients in my body. I’m hoping that by focusing on these 5 healthy meals per day, I’ll limit my “extra” snack addiction. No one is going to get me to give up kettle corn forever (obvi), but this week I’m going to try my best to stick to my 5 meals and drink a lot of extra water.  I’ve been putting a drop of essential oils in my water and it’s making it a lot easier to down 8 glasses a day! Lately, I’ve been adding tangerine (it’s a free oil right now if you’re interested in getting a kit!), and I love how fresh it tastes. So so good in sparkling water too!

Some of my mid-morning and afternoon snack ideas include an apple with almond butter, carrots with hummus, a green juice or fruit/veggie smoothie, or some leftover protein from the previous night’s dinner. Do you have any go-to healthy snack ideas? I’ve also heard a lot about the healthy bars (like PerfectBar and RX) but haven’t checked them out yet.

Do any of you love to snack too? What’s your go-to? And if you have any tips on how to prevent unhealthy snacking during the day, I’m all ears!

  • I have the opposite problem, really. I’m Type One diabetic (but didn’t get the disease until adulthood), so that forced me to not be a snacker- you can’t because you have to let insulin really do its work and not eat outside of meals. 5 smaller meals would be better for me than 3 though, and I struggle to do the two extra ones.

    Kind bars are good snacks, if you need a snack though. Healthy(ish) depending on the kind you get, and tasty.

    • ooh thanks for the tip on Kind bars!! I’ve heard a lot about those! I’ll check them out. My grandpa was Type 1 Diabetic so I know how tough that is. You’re amazing!! (Also have you ever looked into the paleo diet? My best friend’s mom is diabetic and started to eat paleo and now doesn’t need as much insulin a day! I’m obviously not a doctor and don’t know your exact situation but wanted to share just in case it was helpful or worth looking into!)

    I think that it’s really all about the HABIT! If you’re used to snacking – this is your comfort zone! I am also kind of an opposite: I like to be on a “schedule” with my few (3-4) meals a day to make sure that I have great appetite for when I sit down for that meal! This is my comfort zone (with it’s own drawbacks: when you’re hungry – you end up eating A LOT in one sitting, not to say you may also get “hangry” 🙂 And now I’m trying to change to squeezing maybe another snack. But it’s so OUT of my comfort zone!!! 🙂

    • ah I wish snacking wasn’t a huge habit for me! I don’t get hangry though lol 😉 Whereas Matthew isn’t a big snacker and he gets mega hangry too!!

    I am a huge snacker too! But I have actually been trying to cut down or go for healthier snacks. At the moment I’m on caramel snack-a-jacks and Green & Black’s 60% dark chocolate with ginger. I’ve finally found a chocolate I can eat with no milk and that tastes good. But I will definitely join you and try to cut down how much I snack.

    I actually do the 5 small meals a day thing. Before a workout or as a small snack, I’ll have a hardboiled egg with salt and pepper. My favorite “healthy bar” is GoMacro. They have them at Trader Joes – I like the ‘Protein Pleasure’ (Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip) the best. They are GF, vegan, organic, GMO free, certified clean/raw, etc. Check them out! 🙂

    • YES! GoMacro! Someone was telling me about them. I’ll definitely check that one out. Protein Pleasure sounds like it would be my go-to. I love peanut butter and chocolate! Thanks Natalie 🙂
