Last month Matthew and I went to check out the newly opened Gjusta Bakery in Venice. We were so curious about it after driving by it several times, and the Gj in the name made us wonder if it was related to one of our favorite LA restaurants Gjelina. We found out it was! Same owners but a different concept. While Gjelina is a great spot for brunch, lunch or dinner with delicious pizzas and small plates, Gjusta {pronounced joo-sta} is a place for fresh breads, pastries, coffees, and a deli counter with meats, cheeses and pre-made salads. It was a little chaotic when we were there but once we were able to get the attention of someone behind the counter we were able to place our order. It kind of reminded me of a bar in that way, trying to get attention of a busy bartender. We ordered a chocolate croissant and a cortado espresso drink. While waiting we sampled some of their homemade breads, made on location. Their baguette had a perfectly toasted crust and a chewy center. Matthew said it was one of the best he’s ever had. We also tried their seeded grain bread that was delicious! The croissant was flaky and delicious and the chocolate was rich and slightly bittersweet. It was a perfect combination. We also got a little glass of their homemade nut milk. I can’t wait to go back and try more! The only thing that would make me love this place more is if there was additional seating. There’s a marble bar counter that you can stand out and some benches outside, but some tables would be nice too.
One of my favorite weekend activities is going on coffee dates with Matthew. {I especially love any date with chocolate involved!} There are a lot of great bakeries in LA, so it’s fun to be able to check out a new one.
