The beginning of a new year is the time to reflect on your past year and set new goals. I recently shared my goals for the New Year and many of you have similar hopes and goals as I do. If you’re anything like me, you know that it’s easy to keep those goals for maybe the first month or two. However this year I want to find tips and tricks that actually work to help you {and myself} stay on track for 2018! I don’t believe staying on track with goals or resolutions is really that difficult, it’s more so remembering why you wanted to start them and taking them day by day. I truly believe we can stay on track this year so that next year we can look back and really feel like we conquered this year! Here are 5 Tips to Stay on Track with Your New Year’s Goals! Let’s do it!

5 Tips to Stay on Track with Your New Year’s Goals

Make Realistic Goals

This is a really important tip. I used to make really big and vague goals like “keep a balanced life” or “eat healthier” but I’ve come to realize that it’s easier to break your goals down so they don’t feel too big to achieve. In making your goals, make sure to get specific about how you want to keep a balanced life or how you want to eat healthier. I remember things the best by writing them down, so this year I’m writing down ways to stay balanced between work and family life. I’m even thinking about meal planning for the week and also scheduling in those splurge meals so that I can have something to keep me going.  While the idea of sugar-free 2018 sounds nice and healthy, you all know my sweet tooth will find it’s way. By planning those special nights with chocolate chip cookies, I think I’ll be able to keep focused on my healthy eating the rest of the time. I really believe that setting realistic goals will help you stay on track so much easier than making dream goals and forgetting about them.

Set Reminders

Something that really helps me in day-to-day life is making lists. {See my 4 Tips to Be More Efficient} In order to stay on top of my priorities, I make a list at the beginning of the day with what must be done in order of importance. This is something I’d love to keep doing throughout the day and the week. That way, over time, you’re keeping your goals without having to stress about them constantly.

Another thing that helps me is setting reminders on my phone. I’ll receive a gentle reminder to get that one extra thing done or to drink more water. By setting reminders I feel like I can keep on top of my goals much more easily. If your goal is to get to sleep earlier, set a nighttime alarm that will encourage you to turn off and get ready for me. Little over little, these reminders will become second nature and you’ll be well on your way to accomplishing your goals!

Stay Accountable

Another great way to stay on track with your New Year’s goals is to find someone to help keep you accountable. Tip #2, setting reminders, is a way to keep yourself accountable but sometimes you may need to get another person to help you out. Luckily for me, I have Matthew to help me out especially when it comes to eating healthy. That’s something we are both wanting to be better about. If I know he’s on board with my sugar-free week, it’s a lot easier for me to stay on track. When I was in college I had a gym buddy and we’d schedule our workouts together. I knew I couldn’t flake because she was counting on me to be there.

Set Check-Up Points

Set a check-up point every couple of months or even at the six-month mark to reevaluate your goals for the year. This way you’re reflecting and re-evaluating every couple months versus only once a year.  You can even set up a reward for yourself if you’ve kept your goal strong for the past couple months. For example, if your goal is to save more money set up a financial goal and say if you save that amount of money treat yourself to a {budgeted} splurge. Buy that one bag you’ve been waiting for or treat yourself to a really nice dinner. This helps with the mindset of setting smaller goals that you can easily accomplish every day.

Remember Why You Started

As cheesy as it sounds, remember why you wanted to start this goal. For me, I want to keep a balanced work/personal life so that I can be fully present with my family. I also want to maintain a healthy diet, and catch more ZZZs, so that I can be a healthy wife and mom. In addition to setting reminders and check-up points throughout the year, constantly go back and reflect on why you started these goals. I think it will help keep you motivated so that you can achieve your goals!

Hopefully, these 5 tips will help you stay on track with your goals this year! Personally, I feel more motivated than ever to make this the best year yet, in family life and work. Sending good thoughts your way!
