My little boy is two and I can hardly believe it! Where did the time go?! I’m sure I’ll be saying this for years to come, but it still feels very true now. These last two years have been filled with so much joy and happiness thanks to our sweet Augustine. We were so happy to celebrate him the other weekend and, of course, a construction truck birthday party seemed only fitting! Augustine is obsessed with construction trucks and while his first word was Mama, “Boom” was a close second! He loves to make the motion of a dump truck dropping its load with the “boom” noise it makes. This obsession might have started around the time we got this book. Interesting! Anyways, I’m excited to share some photos from Augustine’s construction truck 2nd birthday party, as well as all the details for where we got everything. I definitely couldn’t have done it without help from my sister in law Grace, who has the cutest Etsy shop, and makes the best party invites and supplies!
Augustine’s Construction Truck Birthday Party
I found some construction truck coloring books at the Dollar Store and thought that could be a fun craft idea for any kids that were interested. To be honest, I think they were all too busy playing outside to color, but I know Augustine will love doing this with me at home!
I loved the “Gas” idea and served a kid-friendly lemonade, with a little less sugar than normal. Grace did all the food tents and they looked perfect!
These little drink tags from my sister in law’s Etsy shop were so perfect! I printed them out, cut them in strips and taped them onto these orange striped straws. One side read “Happy Birthday” and the other, “Augustine is 2!” It was a little detail that I thought would be fun!
I can’t tell you how many construction trucks we bought for the snacks! We had one for “Wrecking Balls,” which were grapes, another for “Boulders” which were mandarin oranges, another for “Logs” which were pretzels sticks, and another that was “Plywood” graham cracker sheets. We also served veggies and pita chips with hummus but we didn’t have a fun name for that!
One last minute craft I added on was wrapping mini water bottles with hazard tape. It actually was super easy as I got going, and I was able to do it while watching TV.
My mom made one of our family favorite pasta salads but swapped the macaroni shell noodle for fusilli so that it could be “Drill Pasta Salad.” We also had “Turk Salad” which was a classic Caesar. And pizza for the crew arrived at 4pm!
Love this cute birthday sign from my sister-in-law’s Etsy shop Bradford Road Designs!
I had a hard time figuring out what I wanted to do for dessert because Augustine doesn’t have much sugar, and I know a lot of his friends don’t either. I made a gluten-free, refined sugar free cake that was actually delicious! The kids loved it and the adults asked for the recipe. I used this one if you’re interested! I ended up doubling the recipe so I could use 2 9-inch cake pans. We had a big party of close to 50 so I was worried we weren’t going to have enough. Hence the cupcakes!
There were a lot of cute ideas I saw on Pinterest for a Build Your Own Dirt Cup but again I wanted to keep it a little healthier where I could so I decided on a Build Your Own Concrete Cup with Greek yogurt and toppings of fresh fruit, granola, and coconut. A lot of the littlest kids loved it especially!
Unfortunately, the cake sunk a little bit in the middle which might have been a bummer but it actually worked for our construction truck theme. I put some toy trucks on top which definitely added to the excitement! Even still, I would definitely recommend the recipe. I wonder if it would be good in cupcake form?
I thought Augustine was so excited to see his cake, but he was really the most thrilled about the trucks on top! What you’ll see next is a series of photos as he goes straight for the truck…and then licks it clean!
Happy happy birthday to our sweet little Augustine! You’ve brightened our lives since the moment we found out about you, and we can’t wait for all the wonderful memories we’ll make ahead! God Bless you, my precious boy. Here’s to a wonderful year of being 2!
