Birthday Reflections {+ a video!}

June 9, 2015
birthday fun M Loves M @marmar
Yesterday was my birthday and it was so fun to celebrate it with Matthew in Seattle. I went to school in Seattle for two years and haven’t been back in too long. It was really fun to show Matthew around and really introduce him to the city. He had been once when he was little, and another time for a work trip, but hadn’t really gotten to do much. It was the most beautiful weekend, with mid-80 degree weather, and of course he fell in love. Seattle is pretty lovely, especially in the summertime, and each little area has it’s own personality and unique charm. One of the best parts of my weekend was that my best friend Lizzie was also in town for a work trip. We were staying pretty close together and were able to meet up for meals in between her conference. She’s usually always gone on my birthday so it was so fun to be where she was!
I’ve always been a birthday girl, making my day into a week long event. Are you like that too? My birthday has always been something fun to look forward to, an opportunity to eat my favorite foods, and see my favorite people. Oh, and eat a lot of sweets! As I’ve gotten older I still love celebrating, but there’s a weird feeling of existential awareness. I know I’m still young and have tons of time, but just that reminder that you’re not this young girl anymore can kind of get you. I’m sure I’ll look back when I’m in my 40s and 50s and think geez I was so young! But, still, it’s hard to not let the idea of a new year make you feel a tad bittersweet. One thing I really tried to remember yesterday was how grateful I am for my life. God has blessed me with so much and I am so grateful to be the person I am, living the life that I am, doing the things that I am. My situation could easily be so different. Instead of focusing on getting a year older I want to remember how lucky I am. I have this time right now and I need to appreciate all of it.
On my most recent video shoot at The Moon & Co, Teresa and I decided to make a short little birthday video. Any excuse for cupcakes! It’s pretty silly and funny, and only 22 seconds long, so check it out!
Thank you all for the sweet birthday messages yesterday on social media. It meant so much and totally brightened my day! Can’t wait to share photos from my Seattle trip with you all. It was so fun and I’m definitely not ready for it to end.

10 spring essentials + Video

10 spring essentials M Loves M @marmar
We are now well into spring, and hopefully it’s warming up where you are, although I have friends who just had a snow day yesterday! Can you believe it? Spring is a time for shorter hemlines, looser fabrics and soft colors. If it’s still a little chilly in your city, sweaters and light jackets might be a necessity too. I’m breaking down my 10 SPRING ESSENTIALS and there’s a video too! Spoiler Alert: The little G girl makes a cameo at the end!
Shift dresses are an easy silhouette to dress up or down and I love that this one comes in a soft pink color. It’s feminine and would look great with pumps and a blazer for a spring day at work, or paired with sandals and a cardigan for a Sunday brunch.

Every girl needs a maxi cardigan for spring. They are a go-to layering piece, and the crochet detail adds some boho charm.

April showers mean a trench coat is in order, as well as an umbrella and some galoshes! I love the shorter length that makes it a nice choice for spring.

If you get one shoe this spring, it should be a pair of nude sandals. They go with absolutely everything so you’ll wear them all the time! I love the scalloped trim that adds a feminine detail.

Floppy hats will be your best friend, especially on a bad hair day! They are great for some extra sun protection and they make any outfit a little more playful and fun.

 I love florals! I love them in dress version, skirt version, and of course top version. Any outfit needs a little floral touch, in my opinion, so this pretty blouse would be a nice choice with a skirt of jeans. When I need a print, I always think floral!

I talked about this on the blog the other day but midi skirts are the best. They are perfect in springtime when the weather is still starting to warm up and you’re sick of wearing pants.

I’ve been living in my distressed jeans lately. I’d say my mom wouldn’t approve, but I’ve gotten her hooked too. I gave her some of my old pairs and she wears them all the time! My mom’s so cool! {featured here}
A pair of ankle booties is a great casual footwear choice in spring. I lived in this fringe pair during Coachella and I’m planning on bringing them on my next trip. Ankle boots are an easy shoe to travel in, too! I will never be that girl at the airport in heels. Ankle booties with little socks, yes please!

Stowe your thick knit scarves away until next winter! On the days where it’s still a little cool and brisk, add a lightweight scarf. Scarves provide great visual interest as well, giving your outfit a little something extra!

What are your essentials for spring? I know there are probably ones I’m missing but I guess it’s good summer is right around the corner!

April Beauty Products + Video

April 2, 2015
april beauty products with arcona cranberry gommage, kevin murphy shimmer.shine spray, seche vite dry fast top coat, and lancome high definition mascara and cils booster xl M Loves M @marmar
I’m sharing some of my favorite beauty products in a new video on YouTube! These are products I reach for constantly, not just ones from this past month. Check out the video or you can read my thoughts about them below:

 Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat
When I was working for Ruche, one of the marketing girls introduced this top coat into my life. I think I will be forever indebted to her because it’s seriously the best top coat. The Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat goes on very easily, dries quickly, and leaves my nails looking sparkly and shiny. So sparkly and shiny, in fact, that friends think I’ve just gotten a gel manicure. Gel manicures are nice, but I get tired of the color after a few days, so having a solid top coat that makes your nails look professionally done is ideal! Also, have you ever put on a nail polish color, gone to bed, and woken up in the morning with sheet creases? It happens to the best of us! If you put this top coat on though you’ll actually hide the creases! Long story short, this top coat is amazing and I highly recommend it!

I’m such a Lancome girl, all thanks to my mom! I’ve been using their Dual Matte Finish for years! In the gift-with-purchase bags at the department stores I’ve always gotten a mini tube of the High Definition Mascara, so I’m no stranger to it. It’s a great mascara, but when you use it after the CILS Booster XL primer, magic happens! I’m totally a fan of lash primers now because it makes an obvious difference. My lashes looks a lot thicker and longer after using these two products.
Arcona makes some awesome products and I love their whole approach to skincare. I went to an event with them last year and learned so much! For one, I used to think exfoliating was something to do at night. They talked, however, about how you put serums and moisturizers on at night that help penetrate into your skin to bring up some of the dead skin cells, so, in the morning you need to exfoliate. This Cranberry Gommage exfoliator helps remove that dead skin and also polishes it to make it brighter and clearer. It smells amazing, too, and is specially formulated for people who have acne prone skin.
Kevin Murphy Shimmer.Shine Spray
This Shimmer.Shine Spray from Kevin Murphy is so fun! In my video I kept messing up what I was trying to say, but there are little pieces of gold glitter in the bottle so you have to shake it up before spraying it onto your hair. The glitter catches the light and helps your hair shimmer and sparkle! It’s also really nourishing because of Vitamins A, C & E so it’s great to apply as a treatment to damp hair before styling.
Have you tried any of these products? Let me know if you have a favorite!
