fucshia coat

ted baker coat and white jeans M Loves M @marmar
Uh oh I’m breaking rules over here! I brought out my white jeans..ok, to be honest, I never put them away. But I brought them out especially for this outfit. Winter white is so a thing. And that dumb rule that I won’t even name because it’s so dumb basically ends at the start of a new year. So there! White jeans are happening and they were basically made to be paired with this fuchsia coat. I love how the jeans make the coat stands out. I’m also feeling a little in the Valentine’s Day spirit {did you see my post yesterday?} so pale pink sweater + fuchsia coat seemed necessary. Any opportunity for pink, I say!

I hope you all have a great and wonderful weekend! I’m still recovering from this cold so hoping to take it easy but I am looking forward to brunch plans on Sunday with old co-workers. That will be fun!

Happy Friday everyone!

strawberry lavender scones

April 17, 2014
strawberry lavender scones
Way back when, ok a few months ago in February, I made lavender scones for Valentine’s Day. I posted them on Instagram but never got around to sharing them in a blog post. I wanted to make them again but try something different so I added strawberries to the batter. What resulted might be the best dang scone I’ve ever had. My one problem with scones sometimes is that they can be too dry but these were perfect. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. Can’t wait to make these again!

Strawberry Lavender Scones
makes 10 large scones
INGREDIENTS
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 Tablespoon dried lavender
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
3/4 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
1 large egg, lightly beaten
3/4 cup cold buttermilk, plus 1 Tablespoon
1 cup fresh strawberries, dice the majority but leave some larger chunks
lavender sugar for sprinkling {mix 2 Tablespoons granulated/sanding sugar with 1 teaspoon of dried and chopped lavender buds}
DIRECTIONS
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, sift together flour, sugar, lavender, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Cut in butter with your fingers {or a pasty cutter} until the mixture forms a coarse meal. Work the butter into the dry ingredients until butter flakes are the size of oat flakes. In a separate bowl, combine the egg with the buttermilk and beat lightly with a fork. Add to the flour mixture to make a dough. Fold in the strawberries.
Knead dough on a lightly floured board. Roll into a 1-inch thickness and using 2-inch cookie cutters, make into rounds. You can also cut them into squares if you prefer.
Place rounds onto baking sheet with parchment paper. Brush lightly with the remaining 1 Tablespoon of buttermilk and sprinkle with the lavender sugar. Baking for 15-18 minutes or until golden brown on top. Serve warm. Scones are best enjoyed the day they are made, but you could also freeze them and reheat in the oven if you want to enjoy them longer!

I feel like these scones would be perfect for Easter brunch or for Mother’s Day. I brought some over for my parents and they loved them too. That’s when I know it’s a real hit!
Happy Thursday everyone! Thanks so much for reading!

february highlights

March 4, 2014
February went by in a blur it seems. It was a month of some stressful travel, a huge life change, and one incredible opportunity. I always like to live in the moment but February was a month that had me thinking ahead… constantly! There are so many exciting things in the works and I have to remind myself to take it one day at a time. I’m really looking forward to March though. Settling into our house, getting little G back {she’s been staying with my parents through the travel and move}, and just getting back into our normal rhythm. All I want is to have a home cooked meal and know where all my clothes are. And also be completely caught up on emails. That’s the goal! Here are some highlights from the second month of 2014:
  • Drooled over everything in the latest J.Crew catalog..the pages might still be wet!
  • Spent time with my favorite person ever!
  • Took a trip to LACMA during the week! I needed an inspiration day!
  • Ate dinner at MB Post with my family and had the prettiest salad ever!
  • Spent two short days in NYC! Was there through snow, wind, and more snow!
  • Baked lavender scones for Matthew for Valentine’s Day
  • Played with my new Tory Burch lipstick!
  • Celebrated American Heart Month by wearing red. Heart disease is the #1 killer of women, causing 1 in 3 deaths every year. It’s so important to get screened and eat healthy! {wearing my favorite red Tieks!}
  • Had so much fun with Vanity Fair celebrating pre-Oscars week. Loved hanging out with Jessica from Hapa Time! She is such a sweetie and I wish we lived closer!

What were your highlights from February 2014?
