My mom always taught me that for healthy skin, you need to live a healthy life. Taking care of your skin is also about taking care of your body. My mom is a wise woman and I’ve taken her words very seriously, especially in my 20s. I’ve dealt with periods of breakouts, dryness, oiliness and redness, and while products can help, they’re not always the answer. I thought I’d share the important lifestyle choices I’ve made to help ensure healthy and happy skin.

1. Water is a Lifesource. Matthew says this little gem regularly, and it’s so true. I try very hard to drink 8 glasses a day, although it’s usually easiest for me to keep track of with my reusable water bottle. It’s 24 oz so I fill it up about 3 times during the day. Drinking water is so great for you, especially your skin.

2. Moisturize. If you want to have soft, healthy skin, moisturizing is obviously a must! I’ve been using Aveeno for years {their body wash is amazing!}, so I was curious to check out their new Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Sheer Hydration Lotion. It’s really gentle which is good for Matthew’s sensitive skin, and it’s fragrance-free! It goes on extremely light and absorbs in seconds. I moisturize before bed, and often times mid-day, just because it relaxes me a little bit. My mom has the most gorgeous skin ever and it’s because she moisturizes daily!

3. Exercise. I’ve been working on getting more exercise these days. It can be easy to put it on the back burner but I try to make time for it whenever I can. Matthew and I usually go to the gym in the mornings before work, and then we’ll go on evening walks around the neighborhood with Ginger. We have a park close to our house, too, so we also enjoy going for runs there.

4. Sun protection is key! Always wear a sunscreen if you’re going to be outdoors. I always wear sunglasses as well, or a floppy hat, to keep my face more protected from the harsh sun rays.

5. Wash your face twice a day. It’s especially important to remove makeup in the evenings before bed. Whether you’re wearing makeup or not, you do have environmental pollutants on your face that need to be removed. Gross right? I also use a hydrating face moisturizer, like the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Cream. You can use it in the mornings or the evenings, but I love it at night because it helps replenish my skin with moisture while I’m sleeping so I wake up looking extra refreshed. It’s really lightweight and it continuously hydrates my skin all day or overnight. If you’re not using a moisturizer, I would highly recommend starting!

6. Sleep! This is so incredibly important! I ideally would love 9 hours of sleep, but that’s living in a perfect world. I try to get between 7 and 8 hours, though. If it was up to me I would work through the night. I’m definitely a night owl, but it’s really only by necessity. Lately, I’ve been setting an alarm 30 minutes before I’m planning on going to bed and starting to finish what I’m doing. That gives me time to finish off an email, change into my jammies, and wash my face. I light a candle during this time and that helps me relax and unwind a little bit.
