There are so many things I’m looking forward to with fall and winter this year. It’s one of my favorite times of year because of the cool weather, cozy knits, and all the holiday entertaining. Sometimes I wish the year could just be October-December, although I know that’s not realistic at all. For one, it wouldn’t be as special, and two, I would definitely miss the summer weather! There’s also one big thing that I do absolutely dislike about fall and winter. And that’s how incredibly dry and itchy my skin gets. Southern California has a much dryer climate, considering there’s rarely any humidity. My skin gets disgustingly dry and flaky, to the point I feel like I need to wear jeans and stockings as much as possible. I’ve tried many different methods to deal with dry skin and I thought I’d share my top tips to prepare your skin for winter below:

TIPS TO PREPARE YOUR SKIN FOR WINTER

1. Take shorter showers. I know, when it’s cold outside the best thing sounds like a hot shower that lasts a little longer than it needs to. I’m definitely guilty on this! But trust me, when you’re taking long showers, your skin craves more moisture. Shorter, lukewarm showers will be much better for you overall. Instead of using soap in the shower, try a body wash instead. I tested out Curél’s new Itch Defense Body Wash, which is geared towards people prone to dry, itchy skin as well as those who suffer from eczema. The body wash is so soothing and hydrating with jojoba and olive oil ingredients. It has no added fragrance, although I pick up on a slight orange scent which I really like. I think a body wash like this will give you better coverage than soap, and it will leave you feeling cleaner. Plus, it works to stop the itch before it even begins! When you get out of the bath or shower, make sure to pat your skin dry. Rubbing your skin will be more irritating.

2. Find the right moisturizer. Whether you prefer lotions or creams, finding the right one is important. If your skin is seriously dry and itchy, get a formula that is highly concentrated with hydrating ingredients. Sensitive skin and fragrance free formulas are perfect for anyone with specific skin concerns. Creams may have a thicker texture, so start by using them at night, and alternate with your favorite lotion. Both do a great job at protecting against extremes in temperature and humidity.

3. (Try to) Stay Stress Free! As easy as that sounds, it’s more challenging in practice. But stress can be terrible for your body and health in general. If you’re stressed, you eat poorly and that can take a toll on your skin. You can get breakouts, dullness in complexion, and tighter, stiff skin that leads to cracked, dry skin. Last year I tried to make more of an effort to take walks when I needed to clear my head. Also, practicing yoga has been incredible. It helps me stay calm and focused, and is a great stress reliever. In addition, I try to avoid buying processed foods because those are the first things I reach for in a stressful situation. Even though I like to think cookies fix everything, it’s not true (unfortunately).

4. Use a Humidifier. Winter air is much more drying, and dry air steals moisture from your skin. A humidifier would be great to use in your bedroom at night as it adds moisture in the air while you sleep. Even if you are in dry elements during the daytime, you can at least count on some moisture during the nighttime.

Since the change of seasons can create stress on the skin and body in general, it’s important to stay on top of these tips. Another thing I love is making a sugar scrub for my lips. I mix brown sugar with coconut oil and a little bit of honey, and then rub gently on my lips once a day. Do you have any suggestions on how to prepare your skin for cold weather? I’d love to hear them below!
