How to start an at home garden! - M Loves M @marmar

Now that spring is here and we have so much time at home, I have been really getting into gardening. It is the perfect time to start a home garden and teach the kids about it too. It would be so incredible to have fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables right in our own home. After doing a bit of research I found out just how easily it is to start your own little (or big) garden! I hope some of you find this post helpful during this time at home.

How to Start an At Home Garden

RESEARCH YOUR CLIMATE

First things first, you need to do some research about what you’d like to grow. Some fruits and vegetables grow better in different seasons so it is important to know what grows best where you live and in specific temperatures. I didn’t know that it is actually best to start planting tomatoes and peppers when the soil is warmer. Certain plants also have their own harvest periods and if the plant will yield more than one crop per season.

CONSIDER YOUR SPACE

Consider your space when starting a garden! Will there be enough room to stagger your veggies? Does this space receive enough sunlight or is there too much shade? Another factor to look at when planting your crops is where you will put them. Certain plants need a certain amount of sunlight so, again, make sure to do some research on the crops you’d like to have. We have a raised bed that we plant the majority of our herbs and veggies in, and then we have some pots as well for our tomatoes and kale. FYI the tomatoes need cages because they grow high!

GEAR UP

Finally, make sure to have all your supplies ready to go. A good pair of gardening gloves is a necessity, especially if you’d like to make your manicure last haha, and there are so many cute pairs these days {like this floral pair!}. Getting things like a shovel, soil, fertilizer, plant food, stakes to label your crops, are just a few of the supplies you’ll need to get started. I have some more garden supplies linked below for you! I have my eyes on this cute tool bag at the moment!

I can’t wait to start a garden in our backyard and I am really excited to spend time with my family doing so. A garden is such a great learning experience for kids!

Up next, I think we need a fire pit so we can make some backyard s’mores!
