Why I’m Ok with my Style Being Basic

The other day I was talking to someone about the outfits I’m drawn to and said something like, “feminine, classic, but it’s kind of basic.” And as soon as I heard the word basic, I cringed a little. That word has gotten such a bad connotation lately. Is basic that terrible, though? My best friend and I watched that How to Tell If You’re a Basic B video and were laughing because we were like, “Yes that’s so us! But is that a bad thing?!” Here’s why I’m ok with my style being basic, and why you should be fine with it too:

love this ruffled floral blouse! Such a good deal too!casual and feminine outfit with jeansoutfit inspiration for spring from M Loves M - Los Angeles Fashion Blogger @marmar

Basic is easy. It makes you feel comfortable and more like yourself. There’s nothing worse than being in an outfit that makes you feel self-conscious or awkward, don’t you agree? I remember wearing this one outfit a few years ago and I got tons of compliments on it but the whole time I felt a little out of place. I felt like I was in a costume that didn’t really feel like me. As soon as I got home I changed and never put the outfit back on again.

A basic outfit can be just a tee and jeans, and that’s totally fine! We should never feel like we have to apologize for being ourselves, or wearing something we like and feel happy in. If you like wearing super layered, editorial, high-fashion, Carrie Bradshaw-esque outfits, you go girl! Be proud of it! But if you just want to wear sweatpants and a tee that’s totally fine too! Personally, I’m drawn to the easier outfits, especially these days with a little baby. A top and jeans just work way better for my lifestyle. As a renowned dress-girl, I’ve had to get used to outfits that are a little more functional for my day-to-day. Yes, they’re basic but they sure make me feel good. And that’s the most important thing!

Today’s basic/simple outfit is a version of my favorite go-to outfit: jeans and a blouse. The blouse has a feminine hem detail, a floral print, and pretty tie details on the shoulder so it looks a little fancier than it is. Don’t be confused: it’s still pretty basic. But basic with a twist. I’ve been loving these pink suede mules because of how easy they are to dress up an outfit, and yet they’re super casual and comfortable.  Another simple piece but it has a little personality!

This little bag has been getting compliments everywhere it goes! It also comes in mustard.

Happy Friday everyone! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. I’m going to be seeing one of my closest family friends from growing up tomorrow and it’s her first time meeting Augustine. She lives in NYC so she’s been an auntie from afar. Also, I’m putting together the last little details for my best friend’s bachelorette weekend which is a week from today! Ah! Still a little nervous, but really looking forward to celebrating with her. It’s going to be so fun.

Have a great one everyone! Also, mamas make sure to enter my big beauty giveaway if you haven’t already!

  • I couldn’t agree more with you Mara, i use to try and wear clothes that i wasn’t confortable in and actually felt very awkward and not myself… Now if i’m in a mood for a pretty dress i’m rolling with it, but my most happy self is wearing jeans and a blouse or a t-shirt and flats! That 100% me and i feel good in any situation 😉 Great post, women and girls still need to know they don’t have to wear this or look like that, they can be themselves all day every day or at least they should… xo

    • And isn’t that the best? To feel comfortable and most like yourself in any situation? YES! I love that 🙂 Have a wonderful weekend Melodie and thanks so much for your support!!

  • Rach

I used to cringe when I was told I was basic. But I’m with ya and you know what who cares. I love how basic is functional, easy, and never gets out of style! Plus, I’m comfortable in it. Love the post Mara and you look incredible as always!

    • I love the functional, easy and classic elements too!! Those are always my fave! And I always love what you wear Rach!! You’re so timeless but still have fun details 🙂

  • Emily

Mara I don’t think your style is basic at all! Style isn’t about the specific items you wear, it’s the pieces you chose and how you wear them. Sure, anyone can pick out a tee or a blouse and jeans, but it’s the color and fit of the tee, the wash and cut of your jeans, the embellishments on your bag, your sunglasses, your earrings, your shoes…and how you put all those pieces together to create an outfit, that’s what gives you style! If you boil every piece of clothing down to a definition, then every outfit sounds basic…I would guess there’s very few people walking around in crazy runway style clothes all the time…and plus just throwing complicated pieces like that on and calling it a day doesn’t mean your stylish or that you even possess “style.” Think of how French women dress and how we strive to emulate their simplicity and chicness…and all they’re wearing is tees and jeans! Don’t be so hard on yourself…you have incredible style and it’s not even close to being basic! 🙂

    • aw thank you so much Emily! I totally know what you mean. It’s interesting how we can envy the French way of dressing but when we try it, it doesn’t look the same. Why is that though?? haha! I agree that it’s nice to find details that make an outfit stand out a little more. That’s what I definitely try to do too. Appreciate your words and encouragement so much. Thank you!!

  • This title made me laugh, but you give excellent points! There is a reason that things are “basic” and everyone loves them, and that’s mostly because they are well-made or a great product! I love your take on the whole thing, and I am proud to be basic 🙂

    xoxo Mollie

    • I totally agree with you! Sometime the basic pieces are the ones that are much better made. Trendy, fast-fashion pieces aren’t the best quality and can always look a little cheap 🙁 I’m glad we can both agree it’s important to wear what we love!

  • I love this post! And I couldn’t agree more. Your comment about “wearing a costume” is so spot on. When I first started fashion blogging it was to get me out of my comfort zone, to be a bit more experimental. Flash forward three years, and I think I’m back to being basic. I just didn’t feel like “me” trying to dress like other fashion bloggers.

    • You’re so smart to realize that! I think it’s important to wear what feels most you. I can definitely think of posts where I Was dressing as someone else. While it’s fun to experiment with style I like to always try to be comfortable in what I’m wearing and add in elements that feel most like myself.

  • Natali

Super cute, stylish and lovely outfit! You’re always so real and that’s what I like the most about you and your style.

    • aw that really means a lot Natali!! SO appreciate that! Bummed I missed your InstaLive today! Hope to make it next time 🙂

  • So pretty!

    Shall We Sasa

    • Thank you Sasa! Hope you’re having a wonderful weekend!!

  • I love this post! It’s so true if you are basic own it. I constantly cringe and want to defend myself when someone calls me that, but yet I love what I do and how I dress.

    • I think loving what we wear is the most important thing! Thanks so much Mariah!! xox

  • Louis Dupond

Very nice outfit 😉 Lovely top and mules!

    • yay! So glad you’re a fan 🙂 I love the mules so much!

  • I also wonder why “basic” has such a negative connotation. My style is basic and I like a lot of the things that “basic b’s” like…but I’m not ashamed! I guess it’s why I love this outfit of yours so much 😉

    Something About That

    • Yes let’s not be ashamed!! Heart you Jackie!! <3

  • Madeline Mihaly

I kind of hate how “basic” has gotten such a bad rep. Sometimes its better to be basic, and to your point – you need to be confident and comfortable in your outfit or its never going to work – no matter how many compliments you get!

    xo, Maddy

    • couldn’t agree more! Thanks so much Maddy! I think being comfortable and confident is definitely key! xox

  • Sandra Manley

    Basic= classic 🙂 xoxoxo

Would anyone call Audrey Hepburn’s all black outfits too basic? Or Marilyn’s blonde hair, simplistic? Don’t think so. They radiated from their style, just like you do! Excuse me now, I have some J.Crew striped tees to embrace 🙂

    • lol!! Yes to those J.Crew striped tees!! Thanks so much Sandra! Your comment made me smile and laugh. Hope you had the best weekend 🙂 xox

  • Your style is anything but basic! It’s classic, timeless, feminine… All of my favorite things.

    Heidi || Wishes & Reality

    • aw thank you so much Heidi! You’re so sweet and I appreciate that so much 🙂

  • Sarah H.

From what I can tell, the derogatory version of “basic” means you like something that more than 50 other people like. You know why lots of people might like something? Because it’s great, that’s why. [insert eyeroll here]

    • lol! Yes!! Haha! Thanks Sarah 🙂 You’re the best!
