Augustine's 20 Favorite Books - M Loves M @marmar

I remember filling this little bookshelf up with books before Augustine was even here, before we even knew if we were having a boy or a girl. Books have a very special place in my heart and my life. I really love to read, and while I don’t have as much time to read for myself these days, I love this season of life where I’m reading to my baby. We read books all the time and whenever Augustine “asks” us to. I love opening the pages, reading the words, making up our own stories about the characters, asking him questions and watching him process one page after the next. It’s an amazing thing to witness him comprehend and learn through our reading time.

I’ve been wanting to share this post about the books that Augustine enjoys the most. These are books that we read daily. Augustine will bring these books to me, “ask” me to read and reread them, and most importantly they capture his attention. For reference, Augustine is 16 months old! I hope some of you mamas find this list helpful. Or if you’re looking for a gift to get a new mama, I can’t recommend these enough. Some of these books were shower gifts even!

Augustine’s 20 Favorite Books

Peanut Butter & Cupcake by Terry Border – What’s a little piece of bread to do when he’s feeling lonely? Find a friend of course, and that’s exactly what Peanut Butter tries to do. This book is so cute with this unlikely pair of friends! I love reading this book. Sometimes I think I should do a Live and read it to any of you mamas and babies because I’ve made funny voices for the characters!

The Napping House by Audrey & Don Wood – A cozy bed, a snoring granny, a dreaming child, a dozing dog, a snoozing cat! This book is illustrated so beautifully, and has the best rhthmic pattern. It’s one of our favorites to read before naptime.

I am a Bunny by Ole Risom – This sweet storybook is about a bunny experiencing the seasons and it’s so cute! I love the sweet illustrations.

Baby Animals by Gyo Fujikawa – A little book on baby animals that are painted so beautifully! I love this adorable book and so does Augustine.

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff – This classic is definitely one of Augustine’s favorites. If a hungry little mouse shows up on your doorstep, you might want to give him a cookie. And if you give him a cookie, he’ll ask for a glass of milk. Obviously Augustine doesn’t understand the book but it’s one of the longer format ones that he’ll actually sit through.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle – The perfect book for a baby or young toddler to watch a caterpillar grow up into a butterfly. It’s such a classic and one Augustine likes me to reread to him.

Good Night God by Holly Bea – One of mine and Augustine’s favorites. This is a story of a boy who is on his way home with his Dad and is preparing to end his day and go to bed. He says goodnight to everything {just like me and Augustine do in our bedtime routine} and says goodnight to God.

In My Nest by Sara Gillingham – This is a short little book but Augustine loves the little puppet- he always tries to grab it. This book talks about what makes up a bird’s nest and home.

Good Night Beach by Adam Gamble – This book paints a picture of being right on a beach! Good Night Beach features building sand castles by the ocean, boating, swimming, and more. It’s a charming book about discovering all the wonderful things the seashore has to offer and always makes me crave a beach day!

Doggies by Sandra Boynton – As you may know, Augustine loves dogs! This book is fun because it features the different kinds of dogs but also helps teach your little one counting. Augustine loves to read this book with me!

The Going to Bed Book by Sandra Boynton – This classic bedtime story is just right for winding down the day as a joyful, silly group of animals scrub scrub scrub in the tub, brush and brush and brush their teeth, and finally rock and rock and rock to sleep.

Baby’s First Animal Treasury by Eric Carle – This book is all about farm animals! It shows all the different type of animals that live on a farm. You can also press a button that plays “Old MacDonald.” The music is Augustine’s favorite.

B is For Bear by Roger Priddy – I love this interactive book due to its touch and feel pages, fun photographs, and cute rhymes. This book of first words is perfect for babies and toddlers.

Don’t Push the Button by Bill Cotter – This is such a fun book and Augustine loves “pushing” the button, shaking the book, and scratching Larry’s tummy.! When we first read it, he was cracking up laughing. I would highly recommend this book. I think it would make a great gift too, maybe for a baby’s first birthday.

My First Colors Board Book by DK Publisher– This is a great book that shows kids items grouped together by the same color. Augustine has been loving this book lately, especially when we open the page to the red firetruck!

Runaway Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown – This book is so sweet and one close to my heart. A little bunny keeps running away from his mother in this game of hide-and-seek. It shows the steadfast love of a mother who finds her child every time.

Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown – Another book that we love to read at night before saying goodnight to everything.

Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell – A short interactive book full of fun animals and flaps for kids to flip and read. Augustine has so much fun with this one. I also like to bring it with us in the car because it will keep him entertained.

Where’s Spot by Eric Hill – Another fun book where your baby can search for Spot! Augustine loves lifting up the little flaps and seeing which animal is underneath! Each page gets you closer to finding that silly dog Spot!

Go Dog. Go! by P.D. Eastman – Lastly, this P.D. Eastmam book is a classic! Find out where these dogs are headed!

Did you read any of these books as kids? It’s been fun to read new books and old favorites with Augustine. There are so many favorite books and stories that I can’t wait to share with him as he gets older. I really hope he loves books and reading as much as I do because I think books are an amazing way to foster creativity and imagination. I can’t tell you how many stories I would get sucked into, connecting with the different characters and embracing their feelings as if they were my own. There is something magical about books and the stories they tell.

Would love to hear if you have any favorite books for this age too! We’re always looking for ones to add to the bookshelves!
