With Matthew back at work, it’s just been me and the kiddos. I remember when I was pregnant feeling a little nervous about how I was going to do it on my own with both of them. I know it might not seem that crazy, especially for any of you moms with 2 or more, but I had a great little routine down with Augustine and I wasn’t sure how a baby would fit in. I’m happy to say it hasn’t been nearly as hard as I thought it would be. At least not yet, anyways! Today I’m sharing our family of four schedule – from sun up to sun down! Would love to know how some of you other mamas get by with two (or more!) kids!
Our Current Schedule
We wake up early around here! Augustine has always been an early riser and lately he’s been consistently getting up between 5 and 5:30 am. There were actually a few nights where he tried waking up before 5 am and we were like, “no no no! The sun isn’t up yet!” Luckily because I’m on middle of the night baby duty with Corinna, Matthew wakes up with Augustine. The boys have their breakfast together downstairs and play for a bit until Corinna wakes up. She usually wakes up around 6 or 6:30, I feed her, and then Matthew and Augustine come up and we hang out in bed together for a bit. Augustine is always so so happy to see Corinna. He’ll say “Baby awake?” and he loves laying in bed next to us with the “covies” up.
I usually get ready for the day {here are the current skincare products I’m using!} while Matthew and Augustine entertain Corinna. Then we all go downstairs for breakfast #2! Matthew has been making the best fried eggs lately with smoked paprika and I seriously crave it! If I don’t have eggs, I’ll make my go-to oatmeal with apples and peanut butter, especially since Augustine loves it too!
Corinna has been going down for her first nap around 8am, which is when Matthew is getting ready to head to work. Augustine loves to play outside in the front yard and he calls it “front dig.” Basically, we bring his trucks in the front and play. He also likes when I make him some tea and we’ll drink it out there together.
When Corinna wakes up, we try to get out for a bit and do something fun. I like going to our neighborhood park since it’s easy to park there and it feels a little more enclosed and safe. Augustine likes to get a ball and kick it around, play in the sand, watch the tennis players, and of course go on the swings. We head back home around 11:30 for lunchtime.
Lunchtime is usually leftovers or a mixed plate which is my favorite. I’ll put a bunch of random foods from the fridge on a plate and it’s fun for Augustine and easy for me! He loves olives, cubed cheese, cherry tomatoes, celery and apple sticks with hummus, and any fruit! Then we head upstairs for naptime.
Ideally, I try to plan Augustine and Corinna’s naps around the same time so that I have a little time to myself to do work. At a minimum Augustine naps for an hour and 20 minutes, but the past few days it’s been between 2 1/2-3 hours. Amazing! Corinna’s nap is usually only about 45 minutes, but when it’s longer I definitely hustle and get as much done as I can. I’ve been trying to prioritize working out because I feel like it gives me a lot more energy and mental clarity for the afternoons. If I can get in 30 minutes on the elliptical I’m a happy camper! I also use naptimes to take care of emails, draft blog posts, and respond to DMs. Oh and post an Instagram! I don’t like being on my phone around the kids so I try to just have screentime while they’re sleeping. It’s hard though and I’ll admit I still use my camera a bunch. Who can blame me with these cuties?! I also use naptimes to prep dinner. It’s a lot easier when both kids are sleeping to do some of the kitchen work.
After naptime, we’ll either go out if we didn’t in the morning, or we’ll play outside. Luckily it’s cooler in our backyard in the afternoons so I’ll lay a blanket down and sit with Corinna while Augustine plays with his big dump truck. Lately he’s been having fun playing gardener and he’ll work the lawnmower aka his dump truck, and I’ll be on leaf blower duty using the Vitamix mixing stick. It’s so funny! He has been preferring “tummy cool,” which is when he goes shirtless. Such a cutie!
Matthew comes home and we’ll usually go on a walk together and then they play while I make dinner. Lately we’ve been keeping it simple with salads, shrimp and zucchini noodles, and healthy grain bowls {like this one!}.
Both Augustine and Corinna have been going to bed between 7:30 and 8pm. I try for earlier with Corinna but it’s hard because it gets loud in our house during the evening routines. She is still sleeping in a bassinet in our room but I’m thinking once she’s in the crib it will be easier to get her on an earlier routine. Right now, Corinna wakes up about 2-3 times at night. It’s not that bad though because she usually will go back to sleep very easily. Because she’s waking up more often though, I do try to get to sleep as early as I can. It’s hard, though, because I feel like nights are really the only time I can get a lot of work done uninterrupted. Matthew and I just started that show Outlander too and it’s definitely proving to be a bit of a distraction. I’ve been enjoying it a lot though so it’s worth it!
Life is a lot of the same right now but I’m cherishing it so much. I know this time is fleeting with my babies {they grow up too fast!} and I just want to enjoy them as much as I can!
I hope you all enjoyed reading a little bit about our routine! Would love to know if any of you moms have tips for managing bedtimes with a toddler and baby. Hopefully it will get a little bit easier soon!
